I qualified as a Primary teacher in 1974 and soon found myself drawn to the child who was different from their peers. I gained a qualification in the teaching of dyslexia and moved into the sphere of special education. It was whilst I was teaching at a school for pupils with moderate learning difficulties that I had my first son. He was “different” from day one and it was very hard having to explain his difficulties to schools and acquaintances each time we moved location. It was almost 10 years, before he was officially diagnosed as dyslexic with associated behavioural problems. It is because of him that I am deeply sympathetic to the needs of anyone who has a child who is “different”, or is experiencing difficulties.

Much later I found myself in the extremely demanding role of form tutor and Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator (SENCO) at a residential secondary school for boys with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (EBD). Although by now, I had been teaching for 20 years, nothing could have prepared me for the challenges that I had to face over the next 5 years. It is because of my experiences at that school, and the others that came before, that I can identify with the difficulties, that teachers have to face in dealing with behavioural and learning problems.

The family then relocated to Belgium and I decided to increase my theoretical knowledge and academic qualifications, and started MaMBiC. After 5 years I gained an M.Ed (EBD) from the University of Birmingham. This overlapped with my son beginning his own university course in the UK, which he successfully completed. This achievement involved us in a steep learning curve, which I would be pleased to share with those in a similar position.

The idea for MaMBiC was born out of these personal and professional experiences. I am supported by colleagues from the fields of education, psychology and health.
